> Happy Birthday.
Ruggie: Thanks! Heheheh. Birthdays are the best.
Matter of fact, I gave out presents to lots of people.
All ‘cause I wanted to celebrate my friends’ most precious moments...
...only not. It was so they could return the favor on my birthday!!
Everyone’s spoiled rotten so they’re bound to give me something waaay more expensive in return.
I had to hold my hoard of gifts with both arms last year. Here’s looking forward to this year’s haul!
"Tell me about some birthday memories with your family."
Ruggie: Family, huh. My mother died right after I was born and became a star in the sky…
And my father went abroad for work and never came back. Who knows where or what he’s up to now, so…
Any memories would have to come from the time spent with my Granny.
We hardly had enough to live on at our place, so it’s not like we could afford luxurious birthday cakes.
I always looked forward to the donuts she’d make for me every year instead.
Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside! I can’t get enough of that simple taste.
It got easier to buy better ingredients when I started making enough with my part-time jobs.
Covering them in melted chocolate, topping them in almonds; just some stuff to make ‘em taste a little richer.
I can buy those fancy cakes now, but what I really get hungry for on my birthday are those donuts.
"Your Grandma sounds nice."
Ruggie: Heheh. I know, right? I’m proud of Granny; she’s kind and tough.

"What’s your favorite food?"
Ruggie: We already talked about my ultimate favorite: donuts!
But honestly, anything’s fine s’long as it’s not rotten. I'll gladly eat everything, bones and all.
...what? You think I’m joking?
Hyena beastmen have strong jaws, so we can chew straight through not only meat but thick bones, too.
Treat me to some bony chops sometime if you don’t believe me. I’ll clean the whole plate right before your eyes!
"Is there anything you really cherish?"
Ruggie: MONEY!!
"Anything else?"
Ruggie: Uh, anything else. Let’s see… My warthog piggy bank, I guess.
I found it dumped outside of some rich family’s mansion when I was little.
When I couldn’t get a price for it at a pawn shop, I just decided to keep it for myself.
It’s got this function where it sings a merry little tune whenever you put coins in its mouth.
Like it was happy we were saving money together… so eventually I got attached.
Heard there’s even a meerkat version from the same series. I’ve gotta get my hands on one someday.

"What’s your overall impression of your dorm leader?"
Ruggie: Uh, you mean Leona-san? Okay…
He’s got a habit of using people ‘cause he’s always lived with servants.
He’s a real slave driver, but all the benefits make it worth it.
"What kind of benefits?"
Ruggie: Mainly financial. He’s always giving me stuff he doesn’t need anymore… That’s been super helpful!
I pocket what I can use and then se—err, conveniently dispose of the rest to people who need it.
Next is education. He teaches me all the stuff I didn’t get in class in return for all my grunt work.
I only knew what I needed to survive before enrolling at Night Raven College…
I didn’t get what they call “studying” or whatever, so my grades were beyond awful at first.
But thanks to the tutoring Leona-san gave me from books and old test questions… now I’m sitting right below average!
Awesome, right? It was tough climbing up from rock bottom.
Just goes to show how vital it is to stick to powerful people and to keep an eye out for whatever’ll come in handy.
"How do you spend your holiday?"
Ruggie: Hmm… besides going home, I get wrapped up in part-time work. There’s a bunch that’ll let you live and work there and provide three meals a day.
Like as a member of restaurant staff at a resort in the summer, or as a ski instructor in the snowy mountains during the winter.
Getting to meet all sorts of new people, whether staff or customers, is what makes it so appealing.
Now I can greet and bargain with people in over ten different languages.
I’m sure it’ll prove useful if I ever come across a real famous magician one day and need to network.
“Thanks for sharing all these stories with us. Once again, happy birthday.”
