“Happy Birthday” - Jade Leech

Location: Octavinelle Dorm - Birthday Party Venue

Jade: A birthday interview… I wonder what sort of questions they’ll ask me this time.

Fufu. Arranging to meet at such a formal venue has me feeling a bit nervous.

Now, it’s about time for the presenter chosen by the magic birthday dice to arrive… 

???: Sorry to intrude.

Silver: I’ll be your presenter for today. Thanks for having me.

Jade: Ah, so you were chosen to question me. I’m sincerely looking forward to this.

Silver: Right. Happy Birthday, Jade. Here’s my present.

They couldn’t gift wrap it at the shop I bought it from, so it doesn’t look good, but… 

Jade: And yet you still placed it in a paper bag and decorated it with a ribbon for me. Thank you very much.

Then, let’s take a look at what’s inside, shall we?

Th-This is…!

Silver: You travel into the mountains often as part of the Mountain Lovers’ Club, right?

I picked the most practical gift I could think of, but by that stunned look on your face… I’m guessing you don’t like it.

Even Sebek was appalled, chastising me with “that gift is too uncouth”. Forgive me. I’m not on top of the current fads…

Jade: Silver-san…

On the contrary, I never dreamed of receiving such a marvelous gift!

Why, a rope of all things!!

Actually, the other day, when I went up into the mountains alone, I almost lost my footing and slipped down a slope…

It’s then that I found myself wanting a sturdy rope with which to help keep my balance.

Silver: Really? I’m glad you ended up liking it.

That said, I settled on this no-slip, clothesline rope because it can help you during a variety of outdoor activities.

If your goal is to ascend safely, then you’ll need to train not only your knot tying skills, but also learn different climbing styles.

Jade: In other words… Memorization of ropework techniques alone isn’t the way to challenge sheer cliffs?

Silver: Exactly. You’d have to do comprehensive core exercises to cultivate your balance, muscle strength, flexibility, and agility.

Jade: I can understand why you’d need the skills and experience to tackle such rugged mountains.

If I were to consider long-term ways to build up my body… then I’d want to start by practicing my ropework.

Would it be alright if I asked for advice whenever I’m stuck?

Silver: It’s fine. I’ll stand ready for whenever you need me. 

Jade: Thank you. That’s reassuring to hear.

Silver: I’m starting the interview now.

Jade: Certainly.

Silver: “If you could choose any student from Night Raven College to be your sibling, who would it be?” 

Only, it has to be someone from another dorm.

Jade: Another… sibling, you say. That’s a far more difficult question than I was anticipating.

Silver: Difficult? Is there anything you need help with?

Jade: Not exactly. It’s merely, a renowned academy like Night Raven College only accepts mages deemed capable of excellence by the Dark Mirror.

So I’m having a hard time deciding with so many charming candidates to choose from.

Silver: There isn’t necessarily a right answer. All you have to do is name someone you’d like to have as family.

Jade: Fufufu. You’re such a straightforward individual, Silver-san.

Speaking of family, haven’t you been in the company of Malleus-san and Lilia-san since childhood?

Malleus-san is one of the world’s most powerful mages, and Lilia-san possesses a vast wealth of knowledge.

I take it you’ve learned a great deal from them, doing everything together.

Silver: You could say that. Sebek and I sincerely respect them for everything they’ve done.

Jade: I’m envious of how close you feel to those around you, Silver-san.

In fact, your story has made me want for a reliable older brother figure.

And while I certainly admire Malleus-san and Lilia-san for what exceptional siblings they’d make…

I’m sure every day would be an enjoyable one with Cater-san as my older brother.

Silver: Cater-senpai? He does seem like a fun, cheerful guy.

Jade: I see you agree. He just has this way of bringing a room to life.

That, and he’s amazing at both gathering information and spreading it on Magicam.

If he were to teach me his techniques for taking photos and making them “go viral”...

I could share the natural wonder of the mountains to people the worldover.

The Mountain Lovers’ Club might even get a rush of new applicants.

Silver: I don’t know much about Magicam, but… it’s nice when you can teach people about something you like. 

Jade: Fufu. Thank you.

Silver: Besides, even if you aren’t related, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from him on the daily.

Why not get some advice from Cater-senpai first-hand if there’s so much you don’t know?

Jade: Let me see. Cater-san also happens to be quite the social butterfly, but yes, someday I’d like to have the chance to talk deeply with him.

When the time comes… I hope to hear some very interesting answers to things you wouldn’t typically ask.

Silver: Next question.

“If you could join any dorm besides Octavinelle, which would you choose?”

Jade: Another difficult one, what with every dorm having their own strengths.

Silver: True. You’d learn a great deal no matter which you pick.

Jade: Still, if I had to be realistic about it, there are several dorms that clearly weren’t meant for me.

Silver: Meant for you…? What do you mean?

Jade: I have some concerns when it comes to their environment.

Having been born at the bottom of the sea, I find it hard to thrive in dry climates or extreme heat.

Though it may just be a matter of temperament, given we obtained human form thanks to a potion.

Silver: Oh, right. You’re a merman, so the weather in Scarabia and Savanclaw wouldn’t suit your needs.

Jade: Yes, unfortunately. It’s made even worse by how appealing they actually are to me.

Silver: It’s a shame, but such is life. Everyone’s got their strengths and weaknesses.

Jade: Fufufu. I appreciate your concern.

Now, if I were to take my own abilities into account… —I’ve decided. I would transfer into Pomefiore.

Silver: The students are really refined there. I’m sure you’d adapt quickly.

Jade: I would hope so. I get the feeling I’d find it an arduous task to achieve the same level of elegance.

My choice of Pomefiore has everything to do with my interest in potions.

Silver: What triggered that interest in the first place?

Jade: Looking back, I suppose it would be all the courses we merfolk had on the Sea Witch.

She would concoct so many potions to solve the troubles of poor, unfortunate merfolk out of compassion… 

Even now, I recall the deep impression her accomplishments left on me.

My variety of interests has only expanded since we came ashore.

While climbing, I collect all sorts of ingredients for my potions: strange vegetation, animal teeth, and even insect wings.

If I belonged to a dorm where they excel in potion-making know-how and I could empower myself with that knowledge… 

Why, I might discover ways to mix brand new potions with my materials.

Silver: Now I understand. Your love of learning has me impressed. I’d better do my best, too.

Jade: I’m flattered. Let’s learn as much as one can while we’re students of Night Raven College. 

Silver: That concludes the interview. Next, I have to… 

Jade: End this with the main event, yes: the presentation of the “gift of good fortune”.

Silver: Exactly. Are you ready for this, Jade?

Jade: Naturally. I’ve been waiting for this very moment. By all means, go ahead.

Silver: All right. Then I’ll see my duty as presenter through to the end.
